Mountain Gorilla

Surviving against all odds

July 2012
Category: Mountain Gorillas | D.R. Congo | Threats | Mikeno Sector

Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located along the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is Africa’s oldest national park. Home to a quarter of the world’s remaining 780 critically endangered mountain gorillas, Virunga also contains over half of all biodiversity in sub-Saharan Africa. The park features an incredible diversity of landscapes as well, including jungles, savannas, lava plains, one of the world’s most active volcanoes – Mt. Nyiragongo –, the glaciated peaks of the little explored Rwenzori “Mountains of the Moon”, and Lake Edward – one of Africa’s Great Lakes.
