Gorilla Orphans in Rwanda and Congo: Update
The male eastern lowland gorilla (confiscated in Rwanda, November 2003),
the female eastern lowland gorilla (confiscated in Goma, Democratic Republic
of Congo, July 2004) and the female mountain gorilla (confiscated in Rwanda
December 2004) are all doing well. Each has a dedicated team of caregivers
providing round-the-clock care.
Care for the eastern lowland gorillas is being provided by collaboration
between the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project, the Dian Fossey Gorilla
Fund International, and the wildlife authorities of Rwanda (ORTPN)
and Congo (ICCN).
The same organizations, with additional support from IGCP, are caring
for the mountain gorilla. Discussions about future options for these orphans
are being led by a technical support committee, comprised of representatives
of the same organizations.
